Basque Country, Day 3 — September 7, 2023

This morning’s breakfast  made me think that  we were inside a bakery. There were so many varieties of tea breads, muffins, croissants and other pastries. Our favorite was something that reminded us of lemon squares that had a bottom layer of pastry, a creamy filling, and more pastry on top.

The couple at the next table  was part of a different tour from ours. They said that the temperature had been 111 degrees when they were in  Bordeaux, but they were pleased that here in Bayonne it would reach only 92 degrees today!

After breakfast, we walked to Cathédrale Ste. Marie, 400 steps away. This was the second church on the site, because the original one had been destroyed by fire. When we visit cathedrals in Europe, I always imagine the workers who dedicated so much time and energy to such magnificent constructions.

We walked on and reached a créperie. When in France…Nick ordered a honey and lemon crepe, while I had mine with strawberry jam. We realized that we were very close to a recommended chocolate shop that had my favorite item, hand made  chocolate covered ginger. Because their chocolate confections were so tasty, and the weather was so hot, we decided to try their ice cream. Soothing and refreshing, it did not disappoint!

We returned to our hotel for a nap. Upon awakening, we couldn’t find Nick’s hat, which was a necessity in such strong sun. We realized that the last  time he had it was at the créperie. Back we went. Our waitress was excited to see us.  She had placed Nick’s hat sat safely on the counter in the hope that we would return for it.

We decided to have dinner at our hotel. We ordered lamb and pork entrees, each prepared in a way that was unfamiliar yet scrumptious. Nick enjoyed his first oysters of the trip.
