Thursday, June 5, 2014. On Thursdays Nick gets both chemo and radiation. He had his 8th dose of radiation out of 35, and his 3rd of chemo out of 8. \u00a0He explained his \u00a0various discomforts\u00a0 to his oncologist,\u00a0\u00a0who \u00a0readjusted the\u00a0meds. That worked out well, because Nick\u00a0woke up\u00a0this morning after a good night’s sleep with \u00a0more energy and fewer skin problems.<\/p>\n
Earlier in the week, Nick made and posted \u00a0a video of himself getting his radiation treatment. While \u00a0receiving radiation, he can hear lots of whirring sounds, but he can’t see anything. He must wear a “mask” that was specifically designed for \u00a0him,\u00a0so seeing anything is impossible. His radiology oncologist complimented him on his work and\u00a0said he’d like to show it to others. Those\u00a0are \u00a0words that Nick loves to hear about his photography. He commented on how adorable they were, and they commented on how fabulous the radiation machines were. This brought back the memory fro 25 years ago of Nicholas going with me to the hospital to see the radiation machinery.<\/p>\n We have heard from friends \u00a0who have been through this that one starts to experience a variety of changes after radiation # 9. Today was radiation \u00a0# 9, and \u00a0as if on cue, Nick’s food is tasting metallic to him. I had something special planned. The family\u00a0of a friend owns a Chinese grocery store that brings in dim sum from Chinatown in New York on Fridays. When we lived in the city 35+ years ago, we loved going to Chinatown for dim sum. We ordered some. Shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings, leek dumplings, ribs, stuffed eggplant, and more. They were all as delicious as they were back in the day.<\/p>\n I mentioned that Nick is experiencing \u00a0a variety of changes. In addition to the change in the taste of food, Nick’s energy level is low. He finds that a few short naps \u00a0through the day are helpful. \u00a0He even went to his office for a few hours on Friday morning.\u00a0\u00a0TGIF, because Saturday and Sunday are day off from treatments.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Thursday, June 5, 2014.
