I heard a \u00a0constant sound through the night \u00a0that reminded me of an old percolating coffee pot. In the morning, we saw that below our window\u00a0was a courtyard with a \u00a0water fountain that was responsible for the strange sound.<\/p>\n<p>Because we had changed hotels, we were faced with new breakfast \u00a0selections. The breakfast included \u00a0sweet choices such as granola and six other cereal selections, \u00a0fresh fruit including apples and pears, chocolate pudding, and cakes.<!--more--> There were also savory selections such as olives, bruschetta, ham, salami, and mortadella. And there\u00a0were \u00a0&#8220;American&#8221; breakfast choices such as hard boiled eggs and bread with butter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6171.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1255 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6171-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6171-300x173.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6171-768x443.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6171.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Our first stop for the day was the <em>Parco Archeologico della Nepalis<\/em>. It seems that by now, we would have had our fill of archaeology, but this site was totally different. Rather than a collection of artifacts, it is the ruins of an ancient city. One of its highlights is a 5th century BC theater carved\u00a0out of\u00a0the\u00a0rock. The tragedies of Aeschylus were first performed here \u00a0in his presence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6211.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1254 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6211-213x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6211-213x300.jpg 213w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6211.jpg 728w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next to the theater is the <em>Latomia del Paradiso<\/em>, which was used as a prison.\u00a0The acoustics enabled\u00a0the guards\u00a0to eavesdrop on the prisoners.\u00a0There are also the remains of the 2nd century <em>Anfiteatro Romano.<\/em> The Spanish destroyed the site in the 16th century to \u00a0use the rock to build the city walls of Ortygia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6255.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1253 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6255-300x259.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6255-300x259.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6255-768x662.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6255.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Susanna treated everyone\u00a0to \u00a0sandwiches for lunch. Our sandwich consisted of a hollowed out sesame seed roll filled with roasted peppers, tomatoes, smoked mozzarella, fresh mozzarella, sliced ham, lettuce, radicchio, crushed olives, grated cheese, fresh ricotta, and mortadella with pistachios. The church is built on the spot where Santa Lucia, the patron saint of Siracusa,\u00a0was martyred. Before being martyred, Lucia lost her eyes. The church houses \u00a0Caravaggio&#8217;s <em>Seppellimento di Santa Lucia<\/em>. Nearby, you can see columns from an ancient structure that are part of \u00a0the towns&#8217; Duomo. The Vaccaro-Mauceri family\u00a0has been performing puppet shows in their theater for more than a century.\u00a0The\u00a0<i>pupari<\/i>\u00a0(puppeteers) \u00a0manage both the theater and the nearby laboratory in which the puppets are made.\u00a0They still make each puppet entirely by hand, with a core made of painted wood, armatures in embossed metal, hand-sewn clothes, and so on.\u00a0Each &#8220;<i>pupo<\/i>&#8221; requires one month of work to complete.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6331.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1249 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6331-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6331-210x300.jpg 210w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6331.jpg 717w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a>The shows are entirely in Italian. Some of our fellow travelers wished that there had been English subtitles, but Nick and I thought it was more important to enjoy the magnificent puppets and background scenery,\u00a0rather than to try\u00a0to translate the words. While watching the show, the puppets appear to be life sized, but this was an illusion. After the show, the puppeteers showed\u00a0us that \u00a0they were only 2 feet high! This show\u00a0was a highlight of the trip for both of us.<a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSG_6309-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the show, we wandered through the town until we could find a restaurant that could accommodate six of us. We enjoyed our dinner with Diane, Ann, Carol and Wendall. Nick and I shared tagliatelle with seafood. We\u00a0\u00a0were \u00a0well satisfied without dessert.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0walked 15,880 steps, 7.5 miles and climbed the equivalent of 57 flights of stairs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time in the entire trip, I didn&#8217;t sleep well.
