From the buffet, I chose yogurt, granola, and tea. \u00a0Nick, well into vacation mode, selected chocolate cake with chocolate sauce from \u00a0the fountain, and a chocolate filled croissant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1430a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1513 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1430a-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"153\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1430a-300x212.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1430a-768x542.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1430a.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/a>We boarded the bus for \u00a0the city of \u00c9vora. Being a walled city, it has a unique charm. \u00a0We met our local guide, who led us on a \u00a0walking tour of the city.<!--more--> \u00c9vora has quite a history, having been first Greek, next Roman, then Moorish, \u00a0and in 1165 it became Christian under Giraldo the Fearless.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1458a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1517 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1458a-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1458a-200x300.jpg 200w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1458a.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s a short walk to the center of town, where the Church of Santo Ant\u00e3o \u00a0(Saint Anthony) was built. We learned that one of Italy&#8217;s favorite saints, Saint Anthony of Padua, \u00a0died in Padua, but he was actually born in Portugal. <a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1523a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1516 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1523a-300x192.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"244\" height=\"156\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1523a-300x192.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1523a-768x492.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1523a.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 244px) 100vw, 244px\" \/><\/a>There were cobblestone streets below our feet and the remains of a Roman aqueduct behind us, making the town quite picturesque. In fact, while renovations were taking \u00a0place under town hall, the remains of a Roman bath were found. We walked on to \u00a0a Roman temple that has fourteen columns still standing.\u00a0This town, too, has an Inquisition Square, in which atrocities were committed against Jews for their faith.<a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1421-2a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1514 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1421-2a-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"143\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1421-2a-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1421-2a-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1421-2a.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We have seen many churches and chapels in our travels, but \u00c9vora has one that is unique: the Cappella dos Ossos, or Chapel of Bones. Back in the 13th century, three Franciscan monks were concerned about the public&#8217;s interest material things. They wanted \u00a0the townsfolk to have a place to ponder that life on earth is temporary. With that in mind, they lined the walls of the chapel with skulls and other human bones.<a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1508a-e1509187883195.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1515\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1508a-e1509187883195-300x100.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"372\" height=\"124\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1508a-e1509187883195-300x100.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1508a-e1509187883195-768x255.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1508a-e1509187883195.jpg 1016w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 372px) 100vw, 372px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After lunch (a sausage platter followed by mushroom risotto) we returned to our hotel, <a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1390.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1519 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1390-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1390-222x300.jpg 222w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSG_1390.jpg 688w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" \/><\/a>M&#8217;Ar De Ar, which had five stars! Nick decided to take a dip in the pool. He described the water as &#8220;a mite brisk.&#8221; Our group was meeting for a Wine and Cheese Party on the balcony, so I went ahead. A man came over to me, asking, &#8220;Barbara? From Westport?&#8221; How could he have known? He explained that \u00a0when he told \u00a0some of our fellow tourists \u00a0that he he was from Westport, Connecticut, they told him that there was a couple from his home town in the group. He and I had never met before, \u00a0but he is very well known in Westport. Before we could talk further, his phone rang. He was at the wrong hotel and \u00a0needed to join the rest of his group somewhere else.<\/p>\n<p>There were so \u00a0many appetizers with the wine and cheese that we didn&#8217;t feel the need for dinner.
