\"\"<\/a>We packed and boarded the bus for a \u00a0family owned farm \u00a0in the Douro Valley called Santa Euf\u00eamia, where, in addition to growing \u00a0grapes for port wine, they also grow almonds, olives, and figs. We marveled at the beauty of the farmland. We were near the city of Porto, which is famous for port wine. Wine was featured in every course at lunch!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>With our appetizer course \u00a0of hams, cheeses, and breads, we enjoyed \u00a0a white port wine. Our next course was a bacalhau\u00a0(codfish) stew with white wine. This was followed by a stew of pork, sausages, and other meats, with red wine. \u00a0And for dessert, red port wine accompanied a kind of creme br\u00fbl\u00e9e. The farm also sells wine. Our hostess told us that her wine was reasonably priced at \u20ac4 per bottle, while other vendors would change us \u20ac5!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Then we were back on the bus for \u00a0our next hotel. To our amazement, the Village House Hotel was another five star establishment. \u00a0Our room faced the river. On the left \u00a0was a view of the bridge, while on the right we saw yachts that were docked for the night, or for longer! Our room had a patio that led to gardens, tennis courts, \u00a0and a swimming pool.<\/p>\n

There was to be a game before dinner. We were teamed \u00a0with a “buddy, ” \u00a0because Maria wanted each pair to say something in Portuguese. Most pairs said something like “We like Portugal” or “Maria is pretty.” I wrote a dialog for my buddy and me \u00a0that contained the most important phrase you need to know when you travel.<\/p>\n

She: \u201cI drink too much coffee at breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n

I: \u201cI drink too much tea at breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n

Together: \u201cWhere is the rest room?\u201d<\/p>\n

As for Nick, his \u00a0buddy refused to attend, so he valiantly tried to say something Portuguese \u00a0by himself.<\/p>\n

The game was followed by a light dinner of sandwiches, pasta, salad and fruit. We enjoyed our meal as we sat with Patti, Sherrill, Sandy and Alice.<\/p>\n
