I made a sandwich of ham in a croissant for myself. For dessert, I chose something we had not seen since we left Lisbon, a <em>pastel da nata<\/em>. As we stepped onto the top level of the bridge designed by Eiffel, <a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2805.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1653 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2805-300x250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2805-300x250.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2805-768x639.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2805.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/><\/a>Maria told us that teenagers jump from the bridge into the water in the summer for fun. It seemed miraculous that they would survive, but they do! Then we walked to the train station to see the tiles on the walls there.<\/p>\n<p>We walked on \u00a0to the \u00a0Stock Exchange Palace, which is neither a stock exchange nor a palace. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2867.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1654 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2867-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2867-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2867-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2867.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/a>The building celebrates Portugal&#8217;s dedication to international trade. As such, it contains rooms decorated \u00a0with materials from Portugal&#8217;s former colonies. The last room is the <em>Arabian Hall<\/em>, which is is inspired by Spain&#8217;s Granada and took eighteen years to construct. It is decorated in Moorish style, using wood, plaster, and gold leaf. The room is dedicated to Queen Maria da Gloria, who died at the age of thirty-four while giving birth to her eleventh child, who survived.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2765.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1656 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2765-162x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"123\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2765-162x300.jpg 162w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2765.jpg 554w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 123px) 100vw, 123px\" \/><\/a>After the walk, several of us waited for the bus to our hotel. When we got back to the street on which our hotel was located, \u00a0Nick and I sat down at the <em>Majestic Caf\u00e9<\/em>, famous for the tiles on its walls. We shared a primavera (spring) salad of shrimp, <a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2878.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1652 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2878-300x179.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2878-300x179.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2878-768x459.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSG_2878.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 248px) 100vw, 248px\" \/><\/a>mussels, smoked salmon, hard boiled egg, lettuce, carrots, and purple cabbage. Next to our hotel, there was a French pastry shop that sold macarons. We selected orange and raspberry. This was, indeed, a fantastic lunch.<\/p>\n<p>Our final group dinner was held in a restaurant \u00a0just a few streets from our hotel. Let tell you about her now. She is incredibly knowledgeable. In fact, in <em>Rick Steves&#8217; Portugal<\/em>, he recommends hiring her as a private guide. Maria is easy going and absolutely loves helping people. \u00a0She is kind and thoughtful, and she goes way beyond the call of duty. In fact, she sent her husband to pick up the tiles we made in Coimbra. She is a fantastic tour guide as well as a lovely person, and she made the trip especially enjoyable for all of us.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This was our final breakfast of the tour.
