We were picked up by Yaya, a teacher at the school and our local driver.\u00a0 The school was a few miles from our residence,\u00a0 and we were met there by Arla. The school&#8217;s entrance gate is majestic and imposing! The preschool is called a kindergarten, while at home,\u00a0 children go to kindergarten after they finish preschool.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The first thing I noticed was that the teachers wear uniforms, as do the children. The school and everything in it\u00a0 new, beautiful, and very clean. Arla took us on a quick tour. There were many different classrooms.<\/p>\n<p>Some had desks while others had chairs.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I was charmed by a library that had soft lighting, soft cushions, and children&#8217;s books printed in Chinese, English, or both languages. I was especially pleased to see books written by Eric Carle.\u00a0 Arla told me he was her favorite children&#8217;s author. The art room had smocks, easels, paint, markers and crayons.\u00a0 The children&#8217;s artwork was displayed on the walls, just as we\u00a0 do.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/DSH_5463.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1897 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/DSH_5463-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/DSH_5463-300x232.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/DSH_5463-768x595.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/DSH_5463.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>There was a baking room.\u00a0 It had a mural of bakers on the wall, and the closets were filled with baking supplies. There were aprons and hats for the children to wear. I couldn&#8217;t wait to see the children using this room!<\/p>\n<p>Instead of\u00a0 one large outdoor play area, there were many smaller ones. We noticed that one such area had a climbing wall that was appropriate for preschoolers, as well as an obstacle course. We also saw a room in which the teachers ate together. My son would have wanted to go to that school!<\/p>\n<p>Arla told me there were\u00a0 classes of three-year-olds, four-year-olds and five-year-olds.\u00a0 There were up to 27 children in each class, with a total of 200 students.\u00a0 Soon it was time for Arla to be in her classroom.\u00a0 She is a teacher of Chinese, teaching reading and writing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/DSH_5461.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1898 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/DSH_5461-223x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"172\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/DSH_5461-223x300.jpg 223w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/DSH_5461.jpg 760w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 172px) 100vw, 172px\" \/><\/a>We were brought to a room on the uppermost floor, which would be called our &#8220;office.&#8221; Very soon, our breakfast arrived. On Saturday, Anna had told us that the children were given three meals\u00a0 per day at the school, plus two snacks, and frequent water breaks. I assumed there was a nutritionist planning the meals; I know there was a kitchen staff preparing them.\u00a0We would be given the same meals as the children and teachers. Our breakfast consisted of a\u00a0 rice porridge, an egg, a bean paste filled bun, and a slice of spice cake.\u00a0 What fun!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/DSH_5495.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1892 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/DSH_5495-284x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/DSH_5495-284x300.jpg 284w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/DSH_5495-768x812.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/DSH_5495.jpg 968w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/a>In their home rooms, the children have\u00a0 their own metal cup for their water, their hand towel, and their tooth brush.<\/p>\n<p>Anna passed by, inquiring how we were doing,\u00a0 and saying that one of the teachers was absent. They don&#8217;t have substitutes, so when someone is absent, the children are divided among other classes. We had thought we would be making our power point presentation today, but we were told that unfortunately, Headmaster Chen was not available, so we would be doing that tomorrow. We were disappointed, but these things happen.<\/p>\n<p>At lunch time we were each brought a tray containing two chicken legs, a green vegetable, and rice. The\u00a0 mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks were cherry tomatoes. The main course at dinner was a combination of chicken, mushrooms, and tomatoes served with rice, with cookies for dessert.
