We began the tour in the in Castle Hill district, known for its crooked, cobblestone streets, fascinating architecture, and views of Pest.<a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1394.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2469\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1394-300x132.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1394-300x132.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1394-768x339.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1394.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><!--more-->The Royal Palace is high on the hilltop. In the front is a statue of Eugene of Savoy, a famous general and statesman who was born in the 17th century. We reached the site of the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene that was built in the 13th century, but all that is left of it is its bell tower.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1518.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2450 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1518-282x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"142\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1518-282x300.jpg 282w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1518-768x818.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1518.jpg 961w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 142px) 100vw, 142px\" \/><\/a>After the tour,\u00a0 we took a bus with others from the group, and we got off at City Park. Nick wanted to try the food\u00a0 at some of the stalls that we had seen the day before. I was skeptical, but I saw locals enjoying their lunches, so why not give it a try? Nick and I shared a plate of chicken with red, yellow, and green peppers in a delightful sauce that included paprika, of course. We loved it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1529.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2447 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1529-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"163\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1529-250x300.jpg 250w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1529-768x922.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1529.jpg 853w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 163px) 100vw, 163px\" \/><\/a>From there, we walked to\u00a0 the far side of Heroes&#8217; Square, to the Museum of Fine Arts. The museum had recently <a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1556.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2451 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1556-259x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"204\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1556-259x300.jpg 259w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1556-768x889.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1556.jpg 885w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/><\/a>reopened after a long renovation, and it featured a temporary exhibit of\u00a0 twenty-nine sketches by Michelangelo, some from his days as an apprentice. The artwork\u00a0 in this exhibit is on loan from the Uffizi, the Louvre and the British Museum. Because the\u00a0 exhibit&#8217;s focus is the Renaissance theme of the human body, many of the drawings were considered\u00a0 scandalous in the artist&#8217;s lifetime. Photos of art in this collection were not allowed, but photos of the permanent collection\u00a0 were welcome. There were works by Renoir, El Greco, and Pissarro (no relation), among many others.<a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1524.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2449\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1524-300x124.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"382\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1524-300x124.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1524-768x318.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSI_1524.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 382px) 100vw, 382px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At this point my spirit was renewed, but my body was exhausted, so we went back to our hotel for a rest.\u00a0 While Nick napped, I finished reading the latest adventure in the &#8220;<em>Number 1 Ladies&#8217; Detective Agency<\/em>&#8221; series.<\/p>\n<p>Nick awoke thinking about dinner. Should we take the metro again in search of a restaurant, or should we eat at the hotel? We chose the hotel, and we were delighted to find that the patio was open. We shared a duck pate served over shaved radishes, so good! For our main course we\u00a0 had a lamb burger, something rarely served at home. For dessert, we chose opera cake, a layer of cake topped by marshmallow creme topped by meringue, with chocolate pudding on the side.<\/p>\n<p>If there was a city in which we wanted to spend more time, it was Budapest, but we&#8217;d be on the road tomorrow, so we went back to our room to pack.<\/p>\n<p>15,195 steps<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Budapest, Hungary After breakfast,\u00a0 our group was ready to go to the west side of the Danube for a tour of Buda, again led by Elemer.
