We were told that we were fortunate to arrive the day after the lighting of this year&#8217;s Olympic Torch, because the crowd numbered more than 30,000.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/FSC_3229.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3816 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/FSC_3229-251x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"117\" height=\"140\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/FSC_3229-251x300.jpg 251w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/FSC_3229-768x917.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/FSC_3229.jpg 858w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 117px) 100vw, 117px\" \/><\/a>The original Olympics were contests held every four years to \u00a0honor Zeus, the king of the gods. We met our local guide, Niki, who, like our previous guides, knew her subject very well. You might think that by now, we would be tired of seeing artifacts, but that is not so. There is also a model of the site as it would have ori<a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/FSC_3246.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3820 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/FSC_3246-286x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"155\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/FSC_3246-286x300.jpg 286w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/FSC_3246-768x805.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/FSC_3246.jpg 977w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 155px) 100vw, 155px\" \/><\/a>ginally appeared. Athletics were part of every boy&#8217;s education, <a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/ESC_9069.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3809 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/ESC_9069-300x220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"187\" height=\"137\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/ESC_9069-300x220.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/ESC_9069-768x563.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/ESC_9069.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 187px) 100vw, 187px\" \/><\/a>because the Greeks believed in training both the mind and the body. Next to the gymnasium was a small building in which boys learned wrestling and boxing. There is an olive tree to honor the original olive tree that was there. Then we entered the stadium through the Tunnel of Krypti. Visitors are allowed to go to the starting line and run across the field just as the original athletes had done, although the original athletes were barefoot.
