Hassan arranged for coffee to be ready half an hour before breakfast each day. As for tea, Moroccan mint tea \u00a0is part of a ceremony. The server pours the tea into a small glass from a level of about two feet above it, and sugar can be added. I&#8217;m sure the servers \u00a0have done \u00a0lots of rehearsing \u00a0to become safe at pouring tea, and I hope they practiced using cold water.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As for alcohol, we \u00a0ordered drinks \u00a0at our &#8220;Meet and Greet&#8221; on the first night of our tour. \u00a0Early in the tour, Hassan took several of us to a liquor store \u00a0to select a variety of wines \u00a0that would be available throughout our adventure.<\/p>\n<p>On Day 8, we would leave the bus behind and head out to O.A.T.&#8217;s encampment in the Sahara. The challenge was trying to decide what we needed to take with us for the next two days that would fit in a small bag, \u00a0and what we should leave behind on the bus. Nick has purchased several fossils through the years, \u00a0and he bought a \u00a0piece \u00a0here to add to his collection. \u00a0Jennifer and Andy bought a coffee table that would be shipped to their house in New York.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ESE_1547-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4555 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ESE_1547-1-223x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ESE_1547-1-223x300.jpg 223w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ESE_1547-1.jpg 760w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/a>Our next stop was at a camel enclosure, \u00a0at which the owner asked for a volunteer to milk a camel. Andy gave it a try. Nick was happy to find ice cream there. As for me, I&#8217;m always on the lookout for a pin for my hat. I was expecting something like the pink jeeps in \u00a0Sonoma, but \u00a0these were enclosed \u00a0and even had air conditioning. Being that I didn&#8217;t need as much legroom as my three companions, I took the middle seat in the back. Nick was on my left, and Kathy, a retired educator from California, was on my right. We wondered how our drivers could find their way on sand and having no roads.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/FSC_7250.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4549 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/FSC_7250-300x183.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/FSC_7250-300x183.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/FSC_7250-768x468.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/FSC_7250.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Our desert encampment consisted of canvas tents that were about 15&#8242; x 20&#8242;. Each one has doors and windows, \u00a0a shower and a toilet, and there was \u00a0air conditioning but no heat (the desert can get very cold at night). \u00a0Although the color scheme in each tent was different, \u00a0I noticed immediately that ours was turquoise and magenta. Many years ago, I asked the members of \u00a0my class of two-year-olds to tell us their favorite color. \u00a0Most of the \u00a0children said theirs was \u00a0red or green or another primary color. I was astounded by the answer of a boy named Alex, who replied that his favorite colors were turquoise and magenta. Our lunch \u00a0consisted of a cold vegetable salad that contained cauliflower, beets, potatoes, beans, and \u00a0of course, olives. The main course was \u00a0&#8220;kofta&#8221; burgers made of spiced meat. They resembled small hamburgers; Tanner called them \u00a0sliders. They were served with fries. He showed us his plantings, that included oak trees that produce cork, almond \u00a0and lemon trees, lot of herbs \u00a0including rosemary and thyme, and alfalfa. We were in the Sahara Desert, yet everything was lush and green! The farmer had eight children who helped \u00a0on the farm. Although he was getting on in years, he had no intention of retiring. Several of our friends decided to get a better view by climbing a dune. Climbing up \u00a0was the easy part. Tanner rolled all the way back down. For dinner, we had vegetable soup, \u00a0chicken tagine, and an orange pastry.
