On Day 10, we would leave the desert, our farthest point from \u00a0where our adventure started, \u00a0and head west to the oasis town of Ouarzazate [pronounced where’s Zazate<\/em>]. When we awoke, Nick said he was coming down with a cold. I had \u00a0the meds he needed \u00a0with us, so he \u00a0started taking \u00a0Mucinex immediately.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

After breakfast we \u00a0got into the 4 by 4s. Soon we reached our bus, and we transferred to it for a long day \u00a0on the road. \"\"<\/a>We saw khatarat<\/em>, an old underground water system. \u00a0We continued to Tinejdad, where we learned \u00a0about \u00a0the history and daily life \u00a0of Berber Muslims. \"\"<\/a>We entered the ksar<\/em>, a Berber walled city that \u00a0kept desert raiders out of Roman coastal cities in ancient times. We visited a museum that was founded a local Jewish activist. Then we visited \u00a0a preschool \"\"<\/a>class of mixed three- and four-year olds, which was of interest to me, of course. The teacher was working with one child at the chalkboard while the remaining thirty of her students sat in their chairs ignoring her and talking with children near them. Later Kathy and I, both former educators, discussed with each other ways that more of the children could have been engaged \u00a0in the \u00a0activity rather than just one.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Then the teacher \"\"<\/a>had the children sing a song to us in French. Steel suggested that our group should sing Three Blind Mice to the children, \u00a0a song in which \u00a0chaos happens involving \u00a0the farmer’s wife, a knife, and the mice. I was glad the children didn’t understand English! \u00a0We walked on and met a group of women from Germany who were learning embroidery from the local women.<\/p>\n

We ate lunch outdoors in an oasis, next to an orange tree, and it was absolutely delicious. \u00a0Nick’s first course was garlic and bread soup, \u00a0while mine was \u00a0a patty that had been stuffed \u00a0with veggies and fried, kind of like fried ravioli. \u00a0We both had lamb tagine for our main course, and \u00a0then flan for dessert.\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>After many more hours going \u00a0west, we reached our \u00a0riad and went to the rooftop, \u00a0where we took in views of the city. We noticed that a stork had built a nest on \u00a0a nearby minaret. We thought we could smell a farm, and we were right. The rooftop of the neighboring building was the site of \u00a0a small farm, and we could see and hear the \u00a0chickens and turkeys.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Our dinner started with a traditional harira soup, made of tomatoes, chickpeas, lentils, and a little pasta. I don’t like tomatoes, which were the main ingredient. but I \u00a0found the soup to be \u00a0delicious. Our main course was \u00a0beef tagine, and that was followed by a banana mousse.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n
