Nick spent \u00a0a few hours reading a Montalbano mystery on his Kindle, while I worked on my blog notes. We decided to take a streetcar to Debbie&#8217;s favorite breakfast place, called <em>Willa<\/em> <em>Jean, f<\/em>or brunch<em>. <\/em>Carla ordered chicken salad on a croissant, Nicholas, a fried chicken sandwich, \u00a0and Nick, a Cobb Salad that included avocado, bleu cheese, red onions, a soft boiled egg, cucumber, cranberries, and pecans. I chose a crab omelette with deep fried small potatoes. From the outside, the enormous \u00a0set of buildings is amazing, and once inside, \u00a0it is spectacular. The <em>National<\/em> <em>WWII Museum<\/em> tells the story of the American experience in the war that changed the world\u2014why it <a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ESE_4070.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5071 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ESE_4070-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ESE_4070-300x222.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ESE_4070-768x569.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ESE_4070.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><\/a>was fought, \u00a0and how it was won. The Museum is \u00a0located in New Orleans because many of the ships \u00a0that that were involved in the war, and some that took our infantrymen to Europe, were built in this city. \u00a0We could have spent days exploring everything including the many \u00a0photos and documents displayed there. Nick was impressed by a C-47 Skytrain, a \u00a0plane that was used by the Allies for troop transport, cargo, paratrooper drops, glider towing, and military cargo parachute drops, that was suspended from the ceiling. He learned that it had been purchased by the Museum on eBay.<a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/FSC_7661.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5079\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/FSC_7661-300x114.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"503\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/FSC_7661-300x114.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/FSC_7661-768x292.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/FSC_7661.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 503px) 100vw, 503px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nick&#8217;s uncle, Bob Stolfi, was a ball turret gunner on a B-17 bomber who flew missions over Italy. Sitting in the cramped underside of the airplane, he defended the vulnerable underside from attacks from the enemy. Then Nicholas, who had gone ahead, ran back to tell me that he had seen \u00a0a display about the Battle of Huertgen Forest. Just hearing that name made me shiver.<\/p>\n<p><span data-huuid=\"8851958467303220438\">The Battle of \u00a0H\u00fcrtgen Forest was a series of brutal, bloody, and lengthy engagements fought between American and German forces from September to December 1944. The battle, which became the longest ever fought on German soil by the U.S. Army, was characterized by terrible terrain, harsh weather, and heavy casualties on both sides, with Allied troops suffering tens of thousands of losses in a costly attempt to advance through the dense woods.<a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ESE_4095.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5074\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ESE_4095-300x129.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"426\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ESE_4095-300x129.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ESE_4095-768x332.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ESE_4095.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 426px) 100vw, 426px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-huuid=\"8851958467303222261\">The forest, combined with heavy rain, sleet, \u00a0snow, and mud, created a nightmarish battlefield that negated Allied advantages in mobility and armor. <\/span><span data-huuid=\"8851958467303221682\">The terrain offered the Germans excellent defensive positions, and &#8220;tree bursts&#8221;\u2014explosions that sent shrapnel and wood splinters down on troops\u2014were particularly deadly.<\/span><span data-huuid=\"8851958467303220438\">\u00a0Many of the soldiers died from pneumonia or frostbite rather than battle wounds. \u00a0 <\/span><span data-huuid=\"8851958467303219859\">The forest was strategically important because it provided cover for German forces and controlled access to the <span class=\"M5tQyf\"><a class=\"DTlJ6d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&amp;sca_esv=6e39c7eb808723cd&amp;rls=en&amp;q=Rur+River+dams&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjt8bHn7cKQAxVymYkEHRIOAycQxccNegUIggIQAQ\" data-hveid=\"CIICEAE\">Rur River dams<\/a>,<\/span> making it a crucial battleground for the Germans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I have never met anyone who has heard of the Battle of Huertgen Forest. For my family, it was deeply significant, because my father, Steve Nucatola, who was drafted into the Army at the age of thirty-three, was there. I had never seen photos of the forest before, and it looked exactly as my dad described it, \u00a0 a great many tall trees packed densely together, creating darkness day and night.<\/p>\n<p>On October 25, 1944, my dad was ordered to relieve a scout who was near enemy territory. Dad crawled along on his belly to reach the young soldier. My dad \u00a0told me that he thought of that scout and the relieved look on his face when my dad replaced \u00a0him, every day, since October 25, 1944.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the scout crawled back \u00a0to the Army encampment, enemy artillery bombarded it, taking the \u00a0lives of all of the Americans at the camp, \u00a0including the soldier who thought he had crawled back to safety. Meanwhile, my dad became a victim of a &#8220;tree burst.&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ESE_4097.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5075 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ESE_4097-289x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ESE_4097-289x300.jpg 289w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ESE_4097-768x798.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ESE_4097.jpg 986w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/a>A sniper who was high up in one of the tall trees was shooting at him, and shrapnel landed in my dad&#8217;s face. Thankfully, he was found by another group of Allies. He suffered from PTSD, which was not identified at that \u00a0time. Fortunately, he \u00a0returned to the USA. We located a small, casual \u00a0place called <em>Joey K&#8217;s <\/em>that features a sign saying &#8220;Bon Appetite, Y&#8217;All!&#8221; Carla ordered chicken fried steak, Nicholas, Jambalaya, and Nick, fried chicken. As for me, \u00a0I decided to order Fettuccini with Shrimp and Mushrooms. The result: this was one of the tastiest dinners that I have ever eaten.
