Our arrival in Amsterdam and our departure \u00a0to Rome were at different parts of the airport, \u00a0requiring us to hurry \u00a0to reach \u00a0the gate of our second flight on time. The Passport Control officer asked me, &#8220;Are you in a church group?&#8221; Nick replied, &#8220;Yes she is, and I&#8217;m her husband.&#8221; We reached the gate on time, and we learned that the flight to Rome would take less than two hours. We learned that i<\/span><\/span>t is a major Catholic basilica, one of the city&#8217;s Seven Pilgrim Churches, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. <a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FSC_7802.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5334 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FSC_7802-290x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FSC_7802-290x300.jpg 290w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FSC_7802-768x795.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FSC_7802.jpg 989w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px\" \/><\/a>Built on the traditional burial site of the Apostle Paul outside the walls of Rome, the original 4th-century basilica was largely destroyed by <a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FSC_7754.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5330 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FSC_7754-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"173\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FSC_7754-207x300.jpg 207w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FSC_7754.jpg 705w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 173px) 100vw, 173px\" \/><\/a>fire in 1823 and subsequently rebuilt. We didn&#8217;t know what to expect, but \u00a0we were amazed by its stunning 19th-century portico with 150 columns.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4553.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5347 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4553-176x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"152\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4553-176x300.jpg 176w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4553.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 152px) 100vw, 152px\" \/><\/a>When we entered the Holy Doors, we were stunned by its the massive size and \u00a0its rich mosaics. <a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4588.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5320 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4588-300x165.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"258\" height=\"142\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4588-300x165.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4588-768x422.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4588.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 258px) 100vw, 258px\" \/><\/a>There are mosaic portraits of every pope, from St. Peter to \u00a0Pope Francis, with \u00a0a space ready for the eventual inclusion of Pope Leo XIV. Why did the church&#8217;s artists use mosaics? We passed the <em>Circus Maximus,<\/em> in which chariot races were held. <a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4620.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5325 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4620-300x131.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4620-300x131.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4620-768x335.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4620.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 286px) 100vw, 286px\" \/><\/a>We \u00a0learned that chariot drivers had to go around the track seven times in order to win! We passed the <a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4618.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5324 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4618-300x289.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4618-300x289.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4618-768x739.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ESE_4618.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><\/a><em>Pyramid of Cestius<\/em>, a structure that we had never heard about before, that was built in about 15 BC. Rome&#8217;s other pyramids no longer exist, but this one has been renovated and is open to visitors. \u00a0 Eventually we reached our hotel, the Mediterraneo Roma.
