I received an email from my genealogy buddy, Umberto, who said that his wife, Roberta, an artist, recommended that we go to Pinocoteca Ambrosiana, and the four of us liked that idea.<!--more--> Pinocoteca Ambrosiana is the \u00a0oldest museum in Milan, \u00a0having been established in 1618 to house Charles Borromeo&#8217;s art collection. It contains works by Caravaggio, Botticelli, Titian, Raphael, and Leonardo DaVinci. Also, the collection has a room dedicated to the works of Jan Bruegel and other Flemish artists, because Bruegel and Borromeo were friends. When it became obvious that The Last Supper was fading, Andrea Bianchi was commissioned to paint a replica of it so that the public could continue to appreciate the original colors of the masterpiece. \u00a0We knew that it would be impossible for us to get tickets for the original Last Supper. Jose-Maria and Agn\u00e8s had seen the original many years ago, but \u00a0for us, the copy was amazing.<a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/FSC_8913-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6134\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/FSC_8913-1-300x68.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"138\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/FSC_8913-1-300x68.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/FSC_8913-1-768x174.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/FSC_8913-1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When Nick and I first began traveling, we would order meals &#8220;uno per due,&#8221; meaning one for two, because one lunch order was enough for both of us. That is not so now. I tried to order uno per due, but our waitress explained that my order was definitely not enough for two people, and she was right. After lunch the four of us returned to <em>Grom<\/em> where we tried different flavors of gelato.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ESE_8145.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6146 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ESE_8145-300x244.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ESE_8145-300x244.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ESE_8145-768x624.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ESE_8145.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" \/><\/a>We walked back to our hotel, retrieved our bags, \u00a0and said our farewells to Jose-Maria and Agn\u00e8s. Then we walked \u00a0across town to our next hotel. We learned that the Italian Grand Prix at Monza was being held nearby, and that&#8217;s what was causing the shortage of rooms. \u00a0We were lucky to get a room at <em>Castello Guest House.<\/em> \u00a0This was a &#8220;new age&#8221; room, with a passcode instead of a key and no one on duty at the front desk. Nevertheless, it was comfortable, clean and quiet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ESE_8155.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6135 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ESE_8155-223x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"143\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ESE_8155-223x300.jpg 223w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ESE_8155.jpg 761w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 143px) 100vw, 143px\" \/><\/a>Soon we received a message from Umberto telling us where and what time he would meet us for gelato. We were so happy that we would finally meet one another! We recognized each other immediately. Umberto had told me years ago that if we were \u00a0ever in Milan, he would take us to the best gelateria. My flavors were mango and cream, while Nick&#8217;s was chocolate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ESE_8188.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6144\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ESE_8188-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ESE_8188-300x193.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ESE_8188-768x494.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ESE_8188.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><\/a>Then \u00a0the three of us a walked around the center of the city, Umberto using his very good English, and me using my weak Italian. My maiden name, Nucatola, is Sicilian, with the accent on &#8220;to.&#8221; However, in Italy, is is pronounced \u00a0with the accent on &#8220;ca&#8221;. I loved hearing it pronounced the way my ancestors would have said it!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/IMG_4770.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6142 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/IMG_4770-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"146\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/IMG_4770-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/pisarro.org\/aboutnick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/IMG_4770.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 146px) 100vw, 146px\" \/><\/a>Umberto had to catch a train, and exhaustion caught up with me \u00a0and Nick. We \u00a0 tried to find a place \u00a0for dinner that was close to the Guest House. The restaurant we wanted was fully booked, but we found a pleasant pizzeria and shared a Four Seasons pizza that was topped with olives, artichokes, mushrooms, and ham.
