Nick’s doctors had been monitoring his cancer site, his tongue and throat. This time his oncologist ordered a PET scan because it would check a more extensive area. As a result, a spot was found in his lung. 90% of second cancers occur within two years of the first, and they sometimes happen in the lungs. The only way to find out what the spots were, was surgery. The date for the surgery was set for early May, after my return from Medjugorje. As for me, a breast ultrasound, recommended for women who have a diagnosis of dense breasts, showed an “area of concern.” It was very small, about 1/5 of an inch. My surgeon suggested that a needle biopsy might be able to get it, but I had no such luck. I was scheduled for a surgical biopsy in early May, after my return from Medjugorje. With these things on my mind, I prepared for the trip.

Day 1 Sunday May 8, 2016

Our flight from Boston was on the evening of May 8, Mothers’ Day. Nick and I arranged to drive to JoAnn and Tom’s house at the opposite end of Connecticut from where we live, and Tom would drive us to Boston.

We stopped for lunch in Rhode Island in an area called Federal Hill. We ate at a long-established restaurant with a “nouveau” Italian menu. Nick ordered ravioli with short ribs, I had pappardelle Bolognese, Tom had lamb, and JoAnn, pasta alla vodka. All of our meals were delicious. Our Italian-American mothers never tasted such recipes!

My first impression of Boston’s Logan Airport was that it was more confusing to navigate than JFK, although there was less traffic. Our terminal was not crowded, and we were the first of our group to arrive. The clerk was thrilled that we were going to Sarajevo because it was her home town, and she began to tell us the names of restaurants we should patronize there. We didn’t have the heart to tell her that although our plane would stop in Sarajevo, from there we would immediately board a bus to Medjugorje.

Jim and Teresa, our tour organizers, arrived next and welcomed us. They were followed by friends JoAnn had made on her previous trip, as well as first-timers who approached us asking, “Are you going to Medjugorje?” Our plane to Munich was a Lufthansa airbus, and it was a very pleasant flight for several reasons. It featured two seats on each aisle, so JoAnn sat next to the window and and I had the aisle seat next to her, with no one between us. The food was better than most airline meals I’ve had in recent years. And the bathrooms were a great feature. There were six stalls, all located down a flight of stairs, so there was no long waiting line next to passengers at the back of the bus. We deplaned in Munich.

Before the Journey Part 2 Then came April, the month in which Nick and I would have our medical check-ups.

[7

post-699","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-medjugorje-2016
["GET
