New Orleans Family Trip, Day 5 — October 16th, 2025

While Carla attended a meeting via  computer at 9 a.m., I ate my leftover shrimp and grits for breakfast. Then the four of us got together to plan our day. Would we go back to the WW II Museum or do a cemetery tour or go to the zoo or do a steamboat ride? The zoo won out, but first we’d have lunch. As we walked along, we were greeted by a very friendly cat whose collar said that his name was Daryl.

At Guy’s Po’Boys we had—what else—Po’Boys. Carla and Nicholas shared a  fried shrimp po’boy,  and Nick and I shared one that contained roast beef with gravy. Nicholas said that his po’boy was his favorite meal of the trip so far.  Then off to the Audubon Zoo, which  contains close to 2,000 species of animals from around the world. Our tour book has a photo of the zoo’s rare white tiger. However, the last white tiger there, called King Zulu,  met his demise in 2017. There were  two white alligators, though.

We we looking at female lions that were on the other side of a wall of glass when a toddler next to us accidentally dropped her bottle and said, “Oh, shit.” Having been a teacher of two-year-olds, I knew that they repeat what they hear.  Her mother tried to cover this faux pas by saying, “You mean, “Oh, shoot.”

We walked though exhibits of animals from Africa, Asia, and a Louisiana Swamp. In fact, we were there until closing time. What would we do about dinner? Nick remembered that across the street from Lula’s, there was a Chinese/Japanese  restaurant called Hoshun. Carla and I enjoyed sushi, while Nicholas devoured one of his favorites, pork fried rice. As for Nick, there was duck with plum sauce on the menu. Whenever there is duck on a menu, Nick is likely to order it. That was Nick’s favorite meal of the trip so far.
