I have mentioned a dream that Carla had during the trip. I seldom remember my dreams, but after our last night in New Orleans, I recalled dreaming of my dear colleague and friend, Moira Wright, with whom I had the pleasure of working for nine years, who passed away this year. I will always remember her ability to focus on the development of our students with great care and tenderness, enriching their lives. In the dream, I was going to the airport (which I would be doing in reality later that day) with a group of people. Moira had brought a teenage girl to the airport with her, for whom I would be responsible, but we didn’t start out together, so we needed to search for each other. Eventually I saw Moira, and I stood to make myself easier for her to see. A smile of recognition and relief passed between us. Then Moira left the girl in my care.
For our final breakfast in New Orleans, we wanted to go back to Molly’s Rise and Shine, which was 7/10 of a mile away. When we arrived, we saw that it was closed because the street was filled with construction machinery, and the water had been turned off. Another couple who was also disappointed by being unable to eat there, knew of a place called Crack’d Brunch. We followed them there. From the extensive menu, Nick and I chose to share Bananas Foster Pain Perdu, described in the menu as “buttermilk Texas toast soaked in a custard-like creme, fried to perfection, topped with warm Bananas Foster Sauce, topped with vanilla gelato.” The recipe for Bananas Foster Sauce contains bananas, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, and rum. This was definitely the most decadent and delicious breakfast we had ever eaten. We highly recommend it! In fact, we highly recommend a trip to New Orleans!
