I have mentioned a dream that Carla had during the trip. I seldom remember my dreams, but after our last night in New Orleans, I recalled dreaming of my dear colleague and friend, Moira Wright, with whom I had the pleasure of working for nine years, who passed away this year. I will always remember her ability to focus on the development of our students with great care and tenderness, enriching their lives. Here are some details from the wedding. Carla was happy to reunite with some of the attendees who once were her workmates, but have moved on to other companies. She, and we, learned that New Orleans has a unique wedding tradition. After the ceremony, all of the guests follow the bride and groom onto the street, where the sheriff has stopped the traffic. This becomes a parade, complete with a band, during which everyone dances and waves a handkerchief, going from the site of the ceremony to the reception venue. Carla awoke saying that she had dreamed that our family had adopted a a child. She had gone to sleep thinking about Little House on the Prairie, in which the Ingalls family had four children, and adopted three more.
Rather than awakening Nicholas, the three of walked to the Silver Whistle. Carla and I chose yogurt parfaits from the short menu, while Nick ordered grits with an egg in a jar, and we shared a blueberry muffin that tasted homemade. We took a bacon and egg sandwich back to the Airbnb for Nicholas. Continue reading New Orleans Family Trip, Day 7 — October 18th, 2025
We had to start our day early, because we had decided to take a steamboat ride, and we needed to be at the dock at 10:15 a.m. Along the way, we were fascinated by lavish Halloween decorations, as were the passersby.

While Carla attended a meeting via computer at 9 a.m., I ate my leftover shrimp and grits for breakfast. Then the four of us got together to plan our day. Would we go back to the WW II Museum or do a cemetery tour or go to the zoo or do a steamboat ride? The zoo won out, but first we’d have lunch. As we walked along, we were greeted by a very friendly cat whose collar said that his name was Daryl. Continue reading New Orleans Family Trip, Day 5 — October 16th, 2025
Nick and I awoke at our usual early hour, 6 a.m. Being that this was a vacation, we were in no hurry to get up. Nick spent a few hours reading a Montalbano mystery on his Kindle, while I worked on my blog notes. Nicholas was struggling with jet lag, and Carla was preparing for an online conference that she would be part of the next day. Continue reading New Orleans Family Trip, Day 4 — October 15th, 2025
Four adults traveling together are bound to have some differences. Two of us are early risers, while two are not. One needed to wear a jacket for warmth in the Airbnb because it was difficult to regulate the air conditioning, while the others were comfortable in short sleeves. All four of us were adjusting to the change in time zones, but three of us had come from the northeast, and one from the west. Nonetheless, at about 10 a.m. all four of us began getting ready for the day, and at 11, we took an Uber to Cafe du Monde for beignets.

Our first order of the day was to find a place to have breakfast. We settled on Molly’s Rise and Shine, which had good reviews and was within walking distance. While walking there, we noticed that many of the residents had decorated their houses quite extensively for Halloween. Continue reading New Orleans Family Trip, Day 2 — October 13th, 2025
It is rare that the ride from Westport to JFK Airport is described as enjoyable, but there was so little traffic that we arrived in sixty-four minutes, the shortest time ever for us. The drawback was that in order to arrive at the airport for an 8 a.m. flight, we were on the road at 4 a.m.
Carla took an Uber from her NYC apartment at 5 a.m, and the three of us met at the gate by 6:30 a.m. The airport has been in the process of being renovated for several years, and there is definitely more work to be done, but we were impressed by the changes. The four of us Pisarros reside in three different states. Nick and I live in Connecticut, Carla is in New York, and Nicholas is in California. We all get together in Connecticut for Christmas, but we felt the need for a reunion more than once a year, so we came up with a plan to meet annually in a location that would be new to most of us. In previous years, we have enjoyed our family get togethers in Austin, Texas and at the Grand Canyon. This year our destination was New Orleans. Nick and I will be posting our blog and photos very soon.
