Cruise to Alaska — Preparing for our Trip

Nick and I typically take one major trip each year. Our favorite trips are Rick Steves tours to a variety of European countries. This spring, after our trip to Greece via Rick Steves Tours was finalized, my niece, Dawn, asked if we would be interested in accompanying her and her Mom on a cruise to Alaska.

Before we met each other, Nick and I cruised to Bermuda during the summer of 1970. Neither of us had ever expressed an interest in taking a cruise together since we met, nor has either of us ever mentioned a desire to go to Alaska.  We  knew that we enjoy the company of Dawn and her Mom, but we  don’t see them often  because they live in Texas. If we were to do this, we would see a part of the world that  we have been told is incredibly beautiful. Also, we would find out how cruises have changed in the past fifty-four years. If we liked the cruise, we might consider other cruises in the future. We decided to do it!

The main reason I hadn’t considered taking another cruise  since 1970 is that I suffered from motion sickness during the trip to Bermuda, and not slightly. I literally vomited from the time our ship left New York until it arrived in Bermuda. I was very hesitant about buying a sailboat, which we did in 1975, because of my motion sickness. Back then, I was able to get a type of medication that worked for me, but it is no longer available. Before agreeing to this trip,  I asked for advice from others who suffer from motion sickness, and I purchased everything that they found successful:  OTC medication, ginger lozenges, wrist bands,  and behind-the-ear patches.  Something is bound to work for me!

During each of our trips, Nick takes lots of photos while I write notes. After we return home, we edit my notes and Nick’s photos. We post each day’s  activities and adventures.

  2. Dear Barbara, so happy you are able to take a trip to Alaska. It is magnificent- I have my older son Juneau as proof! And younger son Alex confirmed when I took him to Juneau in 2022. Love you and enjoy!

  3. What cruise line are you sailing with? [Princess] You will enjoy your Alaska cruise. Randy and I did a 14 day land/sea cruise that was absolutely fabulous. I hope one of your motion sickness meds help you. Look to the horizon 😎
