Lago Maggiore and Milan, Day 3 — August 29th, 2026

Savoie: Live above the rest

We awoke to the serenity that we had begun to experience on the previous day. We enjoyed a relaxing morning.  Agnès served us another delicious  meal. The main course was chicken with potatoes and Swiss chard. This was followed by a cheese course consisting  of six different cheeses,  and then, vanilla ice cream and orange sorbet.

After lunch, Agnès suggested that we sit under the linden tree with a book. We were very happy to do just that!

Later we accompanied Jose-Maria as he drove  to the boulangerie to get bread for making sandwiches.

We continued down long and winding roads, seeing many vineyards along the way. We stopped and bought local wine at one.

We continued driving  along to a church, but we found that it was locked. Jose-Maria explained that  weather permitting, that church has celebrated the Mass outside. Fewer  people are attending  Mass these days, but at this church  the attendance is increasing. That may be because after Mass, wine from a local vineyard is served to the congregation. There were so many rustic sights. We  saw a  mare  and  her  colt  along  the wayl

We returned to our hosts’  home via winding roads that did not have  guardrails, but  unlike back in Westport, there was  very little traffic. There was also no TV, no news, and no barking dogs. There was a lovely sunset, and after that, we packed up for tomorrow’s drive to the train that would take us to Milan.
